Aglianico del Vulture Superiore
About the wine
Aglianico del Vulture Superiore represents the pinnacle of Basilicata's viticulture, elevating the historic Aglianico del Vulture DOC to a more rigorous DOCG standard. Produced exclusively from the Aglianico grape on the volcanic slopes of the extinct Monte Vulture, these wines are defined by their profound structure, high acidity, and significant aging potential. The unique terroir—characterized by mineral-rich volcanic soils, high altitude, and dramatic diurnal temperature shifts—allows for a long, slow ripening process that often extends into November. The resulting wines are deep ruby in color, evolving toward garnet with age, and offer a complex profile of dark fruits, floral notes, and spice, often enhanced by the mandatory wood aging. The 'Superiore' designation requires a minimum of 12 months in wood and 12 months in bottle, while the 'Riserva' demands even longer maturation, ensuring a sophisticated, balanced, and persistent expression of this ancient Southern Italian variety.
