Vermentino di Gallura
About the wine
Vermentino di Gallura is the only DOCG in Sardinia, representing the pinnacle of the island's white wine production. Cultivated in the rugged, granite-rich landscapes of the northeastern Gallura region, the wine is defined by the Vermentino grape, which thrives in the area's sandy, well-drained soils and constant coastal winds. These environmental factors, combined with high solar exposure, produce wines of remarkable aromatic intensity, mineral depth, and structural elegance. The base Vermentino di Gallura is typically dry, straw-yellow, and marked by a characteristic, pleasant bitterness on the finish. The denomination also encompasses more complex expressions, including the 'Superiore'—which demands higher alcohol and stricter yields—as well as sparkling (frizzante and spumante), late harvest (vendemmia tardiva), and luscious passito styles. Whether fresh and fruit-forward or aged in wood to develop notes of vanilla and persistence, the wine remains a quintessential expression of its Mediterranean terroir, balancing vibrant acidity with a distinct, saline-inflected character.
