Montefalco Sagrantino
About the wine
Montefalco Sagrantino is a powerful, tannic red wine from the heart of Umbria, produced exclusively from the indigenous Sagrantino grape. Historically celebrated as a sweet 'Passito' for religious festivities, the modern DOCG also produces a robust 'Secco' (dry) version. The wine is defined by its intense structure, deep color, and distinctive notes of wild blackberry. The production process is rigorous, requiring a minimum of 33 months of aging, including at least 12 months in oak for the dry version, followed by mandatory bottle refinement. The resulting wine is known for its longevity and high concentration of polyphenols, reflecting the unique terroir of the Montefalco hills, characterized by varied soil compositions ranging from clay and sand to conglomerates. It remains one of Italy's most singular and uncompromising red wines.

The production area is located in the province of Perugia, encompassing the entire municipality of Montefalco and specific parts of the municipalities of Bevagna, Gualdo Cattaneo, Castel Ritaldi, and Giano dell'Umbria. The zone is characterized by hilly terrain with varied exposures and microclimates, excluding valley floors, which provides the ideal conditions for the cultivation of the Sagrantino grape.
