Vernaccia di Serrapetrona
About the wine
Vernaccia di Serrapetrona DOCG is a unique Italian sparkling red wine produced in the Marche region. It is distinguished by its complex production method, which involves three distinct fermentations: the first from fresh grapes, the second incorporating a portion of partially dried (appassimento) Vernaccia Nera grapes, and a third 'prise de mousse' in an autoclave. This process results in a ruby-to-garnet sparkling wine that can range from dry to sweet, characterized by a persistent fine mousse, vinous aromas of red fruit and dried flowers, and a signature pleasant bitter finish. The wine is deeply rooted in the mountainous and high-hill terrain of the Macerata province, where the Vernaccia Nera grape thrives in calcareous, stony soils. The regulation mandates that at least 85% of the blend must be Vernaccia Nera, ensuring the preservation of its traditional, rustic, yet elegant profile. It is a rare example of a high-quality sparkling red that balances historical winemaking techniques with modern viticultural standards.
