Gattinara
About the wine
Gattinara is a prestigious DOCG located in the Alto Piemonte region, known for producing long-lived, elegant red wines primarily from the Nebbiolo grape, locally known as Spanna. The vineyards are situated on volcanic soils rich in minerals like porphyry and granite, which impart a distinctive mineral backbone and structural complexity to the wine. Gattinara is characterized by its garnet color, fine bouquet featuring notes of violet and spice, and a dry, harmonious palate with a signature bitter finish. The production is strictly limited to the commune of Gattinara, where the unique microclimate—protected by the Monte Rosa massif—allows for optimal ripening. The wine requires significant aging, with a minimum of 35 months for the base version and 47 months for the Riserva, ensuring the development of tertiary aromas and refined tannins. It is a classic expression of Northern Piedmontese viticulture, reflecting a deep historical tradition of quality winemaking.
