Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese DOC
About the wine
Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese is a distinctive Piedmontese DOC centered on the finicky, pale-colored Grignolino grape. Grown in the hilly, calcareous-clay soils of the Monferrato Casalese area in the province of Alessandria, this wine is celebrated for its unique profile: a light ruby hue that often shifts toward orange, marked by a delicate, spicy bouquet and a signature slightly bitter, tannic finish. The disciplinare mandates a minimum of 95% Grignolino, allowing small additions of Freisa or Barbera. Beyond the standard red, the denomination includes a 'Riserva'—which requires 30 months of aging, including 18 in wood—and a high-quality 'Spumante Rosato' produced via the traditional method with at least 18 months on the lees. It is a wine of elegance and terroir, reflecting the specific mineral-rich, marine-sediment soils of the region, and stands as a testament to the local growers' commitment to preserving this historic, challenging variety.
