Ghemme
About the wine
Ghemme is a distinguished DOCG of the Alto Piemonte region, centered on the historic production area in the province of Novara. The wine is primarily composed of Nebbiolo, locally known as Spanna, which thrives in the unique morainic soils left by ancient glaciers. These soils, rich in minerals, clay, and gravel, impart a distinct sapidity and structure to the wine. Ghemme is characterized by its longevity and elegance, typically presenting a ruby red color that evolves into garnet hues with age. On the palate, it is dry, harmonious, and often displays a characteristic, pleasant bitter finish. The regulation mandates significant aging, ensuring that the wine develops its complex, ethereal bouquet before release. It is a sophisticated expression of the Nebbiolo grape, reflecting the cool-climate influence of the nearby Monte Rosa and the specific terroir of the Sesia valley.
