Bolgheri DOC

About the wine

Bolgheri DOC, located in the coastal Maremma region of Tuscany, is globally recognized for pioneering the 'Super Tuscan' movement. Unlike traditional Tuscan appellations centered on Sangiovese, Bolgheri focuses on international varieties—primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc—which thrive in the area's unique Mediterranean microclimate. The proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea provides a tempering influence, ensuring optimal ripening and balance. The wines are characterized by their depth, structure, and elegance, often displaying intense dark fruit, spice, and refined tannins. The appellation also produces high-quality white wines, notably from Vermentino and Sauvignon Blanc. The production zone is strictly limited to the commune of Castagneto Carducci, excluding coastal flats. The 'Superiore' designation represents the pinnacle of the DOC, requiring extended aging in oak, resulting in wines of significant complexity and longevity. Bolgheri remains a benchmark for Mediterranean-style Bordeaux blends, blending historical viticultural heritage with a modern, international perspective on quality.
