Morellino di Scansano
About the wine
Morellino di Scansano is a distinguished Tuscan DOCG centered on the Sangiovese grape, locally known as Morellino. Produced in the hilly landscapes of the Grosseto province between the Ombrone and Albegna rivers, this wine benefits from a warm, Mediterranean climate that fosters optimal ripening. The regulation mandates a minimum of 85% Sangiovese, allowing up to 15% of other non-aromatic black grapes permitted in Tuscany. The resulting wine is typically ruby red, evolving toward garnet with age, characterized by an intense, vinous bouquet with notes of red forest fruits. On the palate, it is dry, warm, and moderately tannic. The Riserva typology requires at least two years of aging, including a minimum of one year in wood, which adds complexity, spice, and deeper structure. This DOCG represents a historic viticultural tradition dating back to the Etruscans, refined over centuries to produce a balanced, approachable, yet age-worthy expression of the Maremma territory.
